About Sound Basics

Decibel (dB) – A unit used to measure the intensity of a sound or the power level of an electrical signal by comparing it with a given level on a logarithmic scale. Or in simpler terms, the scale used to measure how loud something is.

Frequency (Hz) – The rate at which a vibration occurs that constitutes a wave, in a material (as in sound waves) usually measured per second. Often referred to as pitch or tone.

Transmission Loss – The measure of the decibel loss from one side of a barrier to another. This can be found in any situation where there is a physical barrier. The concept of transmission loss is crucial to understand which product best suits your needs.

STC Rating – The STC rating is how the noise isolation performance of the products we offer are quantified, with a higher STC rating generally offering a higher transmission loss. The STC rating is calculated by taking transmission loss values at various frequencies and is compared to standard STC reference values.

Any unwanted or disruptive sound that interferes with comfort, communication, or operations. In industrial and architectural settings, noise can originate from various sources such as machinery, HVAC systems, or environmental factors. Excessive noise not only impacts productivity and concentration but can also lead to regulatory compliance issues and health concerns, including hearing loss and stress-related conditions.
